PURPOSE AND MISSION:

PURPOSE:  The purpose of the Hershel Woody Williams Scholarship is to assist and encourage United States Marine Corps Survivors and Marine Corps League Families in West Virginia to further their education and academic achievements following graduation from High School and to offer Members of the League the opportunity to advance their educational goals. The Hershel Woody Williams Scholarship is incorporated in the West Virginia Department of the Marine Corps League and is governed by the Department Board of Trustees consisting of Department Commandant, Department Senior Vice Commandant, Jr Vice Commandant, Department Judge Advocate with a  (3) three-member committee appointed by the Board of Trustees to administer the scholarship program under Department of West Virginia Marine Corps League By-Laws. 

MISSION:  To provide (4) four  $500.00 scholarships to eligible  survivors of Marines dying in line of duty while in the United States Marine Corps and for families of eligible members of the West Virginia Department Marine Corps League.

Scholarships not to exceed (4) four $500.00 each,  is made available yearly  upon application with supporting documents to the Scholarship Committee and meeting the criteria set out in the By-Laws of the Department of West Virginia Marine Corps League.

ELIGIBILITY:

a) Son, Daughter, Grandchild. Stepson, or Stepdaughter of a West Virginia Marine who lost his/her life in the line of duty in the United States Marine Corps.

b) Son, Daughter, Grandchild, Stepson or Stepdaughter of a Department of West Virginia Marine Corps League current member or Auxiliary member.

c) Current League member and their spouses.
Scholarships will be awarded in this order: (a) then (b) then (c).    
Scholarships are available for Educational goals in Colleges, Trade Schools, or Specialty Courses for which there is a tuition fee or cost. Scholarship awards are issued to the academic institution or place of instruction of choice. Should the eligible person fail to enroll as approved, the scholarship award will be returned to the Scholarship Committee Chair. Scholarship will be awarded based upon the application and supporting documents received prior to March 15 of the current year. The decision of the Scholarship Committee of those eligible is final.

REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants shall comply with these requirements for the application for Scholarship award to be valid:

a) Complete and sign the application and ensure all required supporting documents with the Signature of the Commandant or Adjutant of the member of the Marine Corps League Detachment are enclosed in one package. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

b) Provide a letter of recommendations from the following:

For High School Students................High School Administrator
For University-College Students.......Counselor or Advisor
Record of Grades.............................Optional
Proof of acceptance by an Education Institution of Higher Learning or Recognized Trade School or special course of study.

c) A brief handwritten life history to include School, Community, Church, extra curricular activities and goals; not to exceed (1) page.

AUTHORITY:
Contributions to the Hershel Woody Williams Scholarship Foundation are tax exempt as provided Marine Corps League, Department of West Virginia  under 501©(3) as a private Non- Profit Veterans Program and  by Federal ID  Tax Exempt No. 55-075-0666.
